Outlook 2007 - loses focus while composing email

Running Outlook 2007 part of Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 on Windows XP. Using AVG free anti-virus, and Windows Defender for Spyware.

When typing a new email, the new message window loses focus requiring me to click on it again to begin typing. This seems to correspond with everytime Outlook performs the automatic send/recieve. I turned off that feature, using F9 instead, and the issue seems resolved.

Any ideas as to how I can resolve the issue so I can turn the automatic send/receive back on?

Also as an FYI, I have scanned using every free spyware software, run full system virus checks, removed all add-ins that were non-essential, all to no avail.
