Outlook 2007, messages stuck in Outbox

I've never had this problem before in previous versions of Outlook and it's
starting to drive me crazy!

(non exchange environment on Vista)
If I compose a new email and type a partial email address and then click
'Check Names' the email will get stuck in my Outbox and the icon in the
taskbar will start flashing like when doing a send/receive. The tooltip says
'Microsoft Outlook is Synchronizing folders'
No idea what it thinks it's synchronizing
I then have to change to working offline and sometimes close and reopen
Outlook to be able to drag the email into the drafts folder
If I then delete the email address and enter it manually it will send ok

Found a few possible solutions on the net for earlier Outlook versions but
none have worked for me
Reinstalled Office
I've run scanpst and fixed errors
Deleted email accounts and recreated
Created a new pst and copied emails, contacts and calender accross and then
deleted old pst
Deleted Outlook profile and created a new one
Deleted Outlook Address Book and recreated
Occasionally it has worked for the odd email but shortly reoccurs

I've also noticed that when I preview the item when moved back to drafts
that it is being sent from wrong address but when I open it it lists the
right account to send it through

Any ideas?

I have this same problem when trying to receive. Runs forever and
then either dies, coughs up an error message or ignores mail waiting
to be downloaded. Clean install of Vista and Office 2007. Not a
happy camper.
