Outlook 2007 Pro does Not Close When Exiting.

Hi:

I'm running Outlook 2007 Professional on a computer using the Windows XP Pro
SP2 operating system. Many times, when I open Outlook 2007, I get a message
that Outlook did not close properly, is correcting the (data) file, and an
icon appears in the lower right corner of my Outlook 2007 screen.

I believe that the Windows search indexing program may be interfering with
the shutdown. I have a clean virus free machine and have tried many
workarounds. One that works for me is to compact my Personal Folder file
while in Outlook. By doing this the "fixing the file" process stops and the
icon on the lower right disappears.

I have used Scanpst.exe many times. Although it may corect the situation for
the next one or two times I startup Outlook 2007, the problem reappears.

I'm using Avast as my anti-Virus program and there is a possibility that it
is interfering with my Outlook files closing properly. I understand that
others have experienced this problem.

I have not installed Sevice Pack 1 for Office 2007. Would this help?

Is there a solution?

Ok, try this.

Reboot your machine.
Go to Start - Run and run outlook /safe
Once Outlook is up, go to File - Exit.
Wait a minute.
Pull up Task Manager (control-shift-escape) and go to Processes.
Is Outlook.exe listed?

If no, start Outlook normally.
Once Outlook is up, go to File - Exit.
Wait a minute.
Is outlook.exe still listed under Processes?

If it is, then there's likely an add-in causing a problem. A blackberry
redirectory, itunes plug-in, A/V... something. Start disabling them til
outlook.exe disappears when you quit.

Hi:

Many thanks for your reply:

I tried everything you said and more. Here are the results:

1. At no time did Outlook.exe show up in Task Manager. The Outlook 2007
Diagnostic was not accurate.

2. I shut down all memory resident programs: Google Desktop, Windows Desktop
Search, and my Avast! anti-virus program. But, the problem remained.

3. I ran MS Office Diagnostics, it corrected something minor, but my main
problem continued.

However.... after extensive testing, and Opening and Exiting Outlook 2007, I
discovered that on some occasions Outlook 2007 would Exit Open properly, and
here is where the problem arises:

i) If I delete some messages, leave them in the Delete folder, Exit and
re Open Outlook 2007, the program will open as it should,

ii) If I delete some messages, go to Tools, click on Empty "Deleted Files
Folder," Exit, and re Open Putlook 2007, the problem will occur, and

iii) If Empty the Deleted Items folder on exiting is ticked, I delete
some E-mail messages, then Exit and re Open Outlook, the problem occurs
again.

CONCLUSION
My problem of Outlook 2007 not closing previously and reporting the problem
when I re Open it, arises only when I delete messages and clear them out of
the Deleted File folder either while in Outlook 2007 or when Exiting
Outlook.

Are there any fixes for the problem?

Just because I want to be 100% sure, is it appearing when Outlook is running?
What's this about the diagnostic?

I don't see anythign here about starting in Safe mode. Did you actually
try that? If you try your steps to reproduce the problem while in Safe mode,
does it still happen? I've never heard of anyone having this particular
issue personally, so as to whether there are fixes or not, I really couldn't
say.

Yes

What's this about the diagnostic?

It says something to the effect that Outlook did not previously close
properly, and two wheels that look like Gears appear in the lower left hand
corner of my Outlook screen.

However, immediately after exiting from Outlook, Task Manager does not show
Outlook 2007 as still running.

Yes I did.

still happen?

Absolutely Yes.

It's a known problem. In my case, it happens when either I empty my Deleted
files folder automatically on Exit by default, or I click on Empty "Deleted
Files Folder" while in Outlook. For more information, you can go to:

PS: A version or two ago, Adobe had a similar problem with its Acrobat
Reader.

Hi:

I think I have resolved my problem.

I had Google Desktop and Windows Desktop Search running at the same time.

After more testing, I found that if I use just Windows Desktop Search alone,
Outlook 2007 will run fine.
