Outlook 2007 .pst files

I'm a self-emplyed user of Windows 7 and Outlook 2007. I use an external
(commercial) ISP and Exchange host who does not backup my inbox, calendar or
contacts. I permanently deleted some Contacts recently and wanted several
back. I searched my regular Windows 7 backup and found nothing.

Learning for the first time that backup doesn't cover Outlook files (why
not?) I have downloded the Personal Files Backup Tool from Microsoft Office
Online, but it seems confused: sometimes the Contacts it backs up are not my
most recent. Now when I click Backup on the File menu, the dialog box does
not even include an option to back up Personal Folders or Contacts, only
Internet Calendars and SharePoint Lists. I don't know what the latter are.

There seem to be several ways to backup .pst files. None I have tried so far
is straightforward or working for me. Then I read in Support for Outlook
2007:

Personal Folders Backup tool only backs up .pst files. If you have an
Exchange mailbox, your server mailbox folders should be backed up regularly
by your Exchange administrator.

My administrator doesn't offer this service. Can anyone recommend a simple
way to backup files? I have an external hard drive with folders set up to
hold backups, but the Outlook Personal Folders Backup Tool doesn't seem to
link to them in the way I think they are meant to.

Very many thanks for any help you can give.
