Outlook 2007 pst maximum size?

I'm running Office 2007 on a Vista Home Premium machine. What is the maximum
size that the pst file can be for Outlook 2007? I've heard some crazy sizes.
I'm having a problem with Outlook. It just stops downloading e-mail from time
to time. The only way to resolve it is to restart the program. I've been told
by various tech support people that my pst is too large. It is 9gb. I've
archived several times, but the file size doesn't seem to decrease.

The Office Outlook Personal Folders file has a soft limit of 20GB on a NTFS
formatted partition.

After removing items, you would need to compact the PST. Right click on
"personal folders" in folder list and select properties > advanced button >
compact now. warning: this can take along time to complete

Thanks for that info, but what is "soft limit"? I spoke with a level 2 tech
person at Microsoft & was told the max was right at 1000gb. That sounded
pretty high, so that's why I'm here.

The Windows Registry has some values that tell Outlook what to consider as
the PST file limit. Those values direct Outlook to consider 20 GB the size
limit, but the values can be changed so that the PST can grow larger than
that if need be. The theoretical limit for a Unicode PST is something like
2 TB, I seem to recall.

That's what I thought I had heard. Are you with Microsoft? Is there any good
reason to manually set the pst to a larger size? I deal with tons of e-mail
daily, where I'm sent large files. Do you know how to change the pst size or
do you know where I can find that info?

No. Rarely do Microsoft employees read or post in these newsgroups.

The PST will grow as needed. Do you mean manualy change the limit on its
size?

If you're sending and receiving messages that will fill up 20 GB, then
you're not using mail properly. Mail isn't intended as a transport for
massive files. Use FTP instead.
