Outlook 2007 RTM slow email receive

A

Ales Susnik

Does anyone else have problems with Outlook 2007, when receiving emails?

Got a HP nw9440, 2.16 dual core, 2gb ram... receiving 5mb of emails, all
together 87 msges takes a long time to receive.
There is obvious disk big disk activity.

5 emails accounts, all POP3.

Antivirus software is NOD32, XP SP2, all possible updates.

Outlook 2003 worked like a charm. PST is 3gb big, cleaned it down to 2.4
same behaviour, now cleaning it down do alot less, will see results, haven't
had any luck yet.

I've even uninstalled Windows Desktop Search, no better results.

Anyone has any ideas?!?

Is your AV software integrated into Outlook? If yes, switch it off?
Have you tried running Outlook in safe mode (Start, run, "outlook
/safe"). If yes, do you see the same behavior?

Within your AV, there might be a setting called Outlook, Exchange
Integration or email AV scanning.

Ow, sorry... (feel blonde here right now)... that yes i have it enabled...
not using this might be a problem... thinking how to test...
But interestingly, now that PST is 1.4gb only, before was 3.6, 6.4gb, it
runs smoothly... it it posible the PST size is killing it?

See my other response.
The AV integration adds zero security. After all, your AV scanner scans
all attachments anyhow when you open them from Outlook, and that is the
biggest issue with emails.
In addition, the HTML support of Outlook doesn't support any HTML and
CSS elements that could be exploited, and as far as I know the
integrated AV scanner doesn't really check for these things anyhow.

Good points. Plus, unless something changed, Outlook doesn't even let you
get to dangerous attachments without going well out of your way--not to
mention that most people retrieve mail from places that have already scanned
the messages.

But AV companies will keep selling mail security anyway.

I think a lot of people might want to enable outgoing scanning, however (I
don't bother with that, either).

Ales,
You are not the only one. This is a problem that has existed since the early
Beta. I hoped it would be addressed in the Beta2 Refresh, but was not. Now,
i'm shocked to see it ended up in the RTM. Do a google search, you'll see
several people complaining about this.

I personally use Outlook on a daily basis, and since installing the OL2007
RTM, i can't get anything done. I've had to set SEND/RECEIVE interval to
every 30 minutes, down from the usual 2 minutes... like everyone here has
reported, my hard drive goes nuts when messages arrive. Deleting messages is
also a task. Switching folders can take up to a minute. It's like the product
is still in beta.

Disabling AV programs, etc won't help. Compacting the PST, defragging, etc
won't help either. I've read some people "improved" performance by archiving
a large chunk of their messages. I find this to be a lazy solution at best.
My PST size is 1.5GB... it's unacceptable to me to think that Outlook can not
handle a 1.5GB PST file, when the 2000, XP, and 2003 versions handled it just
fine.

I'm no Microsoft hater, but i can't believe they would leave this problem
unchecked.
