Outlook 2007 runs my HD for 30 sec. for every received email

I upgraded from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 and now every time I
receive an email, even with Outlook and third-party antispam disabled,
my HD runs desperately for 20-30 seconds blocking the usability of
Outlook and almost blocking the usability of the whole Windows.
My PST is 5GB and my inbox contains atleast 50000 emails but it was
not a problem in Outlook 2003.

What can be the cause?

Your big PST and lots of emails. Outlook 2007 has performance problems
with that. You should reduce your PST dramatically (get it to 1 GB) and
you'll see better performance.

I saw that KB and just laughed. Sounds to me like bad design that needs
fixing. Let's hope Microsoft thinks the same...

Has anyone tried to solve the speed problem by putting the PST file in
a (big) fast USB flash memory?

I suggest you try the Outlook Performance Update (linked below) first.

I suggest you try the Outlook Performance Update (linked below) first.

Microsoft doesn't say that it solves 100% of the problem.
In any case since even Outlook 2003 takes several seconds of HD every
time I receive a message, I think it would anyway be of advantage to
use a flash memory.

Ok, I finally tried Outlook 2007 with the performance update and my
PST reduced to 2.5GB.

These are the results:

With PST on a fast flash drive (USB 2.0 Corsair Voyager GT 4GB): 13
sec. to receive each message
With PST on HD: 6 sec. to receive each message

Conclusion: HD is better than flash for PST use.
