Outlook 2007 Show Online Status check box keeps turning itself back on!

Hi

I'm using Outlook 2007 with PST files and connecting to a standard
POP3 mailbox. I've tried to uncheck the "Display online status next to
a persons name" but each time I go out of the dialog and come back in
its checked again! I need to disable it because some of my emails take
ages to open/preview and I've read that the reason is this online
status check. Anyone with any ideas?

Yes - I've upgraded my entire Office suite to 2007 from 2003. I'm
using Windows XP SP2 and IE 7 if that helps at all.

Locate extend.dat and outcmd.dat and rename them to .old. In addition I
recommend recreating your mail profile;

Unfortunately that hasn't helped. The messages still freeze Outlook,
and I still can't turn off the Online Status option (although I do
realize that you feel these are separate issues).

Any other ideas?

Locate extend.dat and outcmd.dat and rename them to .old. In addition I

there something specific I can check if it is this particular profile?

Those solutions do not fix any of the current problems with non-Exchange
Outlook 2007 clients on XP. The damn thing is still slower than Doom 3
running on a 386.

Microsoft needs to look into this one *urgently*.

There are some additional performance issues which are still being
researched by Microsoft. Some other fixes/workarounds;
-have WDS fully built its index overnight
-disable RSS synchronisation with the Common Feed List
-reduce your pst filesize

Sorry, I was over-generalising there thanks to me omitting the words "seem
to" from the above sentence, which would have conveyed what I meant a bit
better

I actually completely uninstalled WDS, and that improved performance a
little (and improved performance of my whole machine a LOT - no more sudden
50% CPU spikes for no reason, even with the indexer snoozing!)

-disable RSS synchronisation with the Common Feed List

I disabled that almost immediately, as I use a stand-alone program for RSS
feeds.

-reduce your pst filesize

It's not all that large, cannot be reduced more than it already has been,
and used to run lightning-fast in Outlook 2003.

The main issue seems to be on the first attempt after starting Outlook to
read an email - it takes forever. Send/receive is fine for me.

The other issue which I have been completely unable to solve is Outlook
leaving its process running after exiting. Disabling ALL add-ins and my
antivirus's mail scanning makes no difference, Outlook simply doesn't want
to go home

experts, but I have a sneaky suspicion that if I can fix the topic
issue (the "Jason from Friday 13th" checkbox that keeps coming back
everytime I think I've got rid of it) things may improve from there...

I'm still waiting on the results for logging in as a different user. This
will help determine the level of the issue.

You can also export the following reg-key and then delete it from the
registry;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook

When you know start Outlook it will do a repair before loading and restore
the default application settings (you won't lose your mail profile)

connect your device after starting Outlook and disconnect before closing
Outlook.

Hi Guys - I've managed to "fix" the slow response on the review pane.
If you turn the review pane off and then back on again (possibly in
subsequent sessions - I haven't got specific), somehow things speed up
again! The check box is still forcing itself back on though. I'll try
the reg entry this weekend and see what happens.

Nope, nothing at all that integrates with Outlook. My mobile sync is done
using software that uses its own database and never even glances at
Outlook.

As I said earlier, I disabled ALL add-ins and spurious rubbish - including

I have now completely *removed* all add-ins and exchange client extensions
from Outlook 2007's Trust Center, including both third-party add-ins AND
all of Office 2007's assorted bits and pieces ("Groove" etc). Outlook's
process still remains in memory after exiting (and further, if the new-mail
icon is in the system tray, it stays there, and new mail notifications keep
coming in).

I really, really want to fix this! Basically Outlook is eating nearly 100MB
of memory when I don't even want the thing running. Outlook 2003 did not
behave this way, nor did any previous version.

Anyone?
