outlook 2007 (sp1) - POP3 send/revieve not working

Abhishek Padmanabh

Just yesterday, I got the update for Office 2007 - the service pack 1.
After its install - outlook2007 has stopped working for POP3 send/
revieve from my google POP3 account.

It was working just well before the service pack install and has
stopped working since then.

OS - Microsft Windows Vista home basic

Any ideas why this is happening? Any resolutions to this? Or
workarounds? Or is that I will need to uninstall the service pack
(which would be rather silly).

Error Message:

Task 'Gmail - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook cannot
connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).'
Task 'Gmail - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot
connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).'

I downloaded the GMail POP troubleshooting tool and when I run it it
shows no configuration problem but there is a next button which take
the tool to a 3rd step where it runs a few tests and that just hangs/
stops working.

Abhishek,

FYI
I have a post on this too. I have Vista running, and just did an auto
upgrade to my Outlook 2007 (which was running fine) and now I can't send mail
from my Outlook account. If you have webmail, that's a way around it for a
while, or if you have a hotmail account and are using Connector so you can
pull the hotmail into Outlook & it will send from Outlook OK. Ck the other
threads on this. I jumped onto a thread where a guy updated his 2003 Outlook
and he has the same problem and errors.

Problem is, the MVPs don't have an answer yet, and I'm hoping that I don't
have to re-install Outlook or the update. If I get an answer, I'll come back
to let you know.

Thanks, Michael. Could you please link me to your post and the thread
you mentioned? I think there are problems with the service pack only.
We will have to wait and see. :(

I have very similar problems - Outlook 2007 running under Vista Home Premium
on a Sony Vaio Laptop. reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook cannot connect
to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP). 'Error 0x80042109 "Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing
(SMTP) e-mail server" In other words no incoming or outgoing email in
Outlook 2007. I have tried setting up my account using Windows Mail using
same settings (POP3/SMTP Ports 110/25 etc) and all works fine so the issue is
clearly with Outlook 07. Any thoughts out there?

The first thing I'd check is that Outlook is allowed in your firewall.

Yes - Outlook is enabled. I even removed it and then added it back in just
in case. I have done all the basic checks and even started Vista in safe
mode then Outlook in safe mode and disabled everything including the firewall
- no joy.

Yes - Outlook is a permitted programme allowed incoming and outgoing access
through the firewall.

Can you telnet to the mail server/port?

M

I can ping the mail server and the SMTP server no problem. Not sure what you
mean by telnet.

In the command prompt window, enter

telnet yourservername port

where "yourservername" is the name of the POP server and "port" will be
"110" or whatever port your POP server listens on. If you get a timeout of
the command, you have a networking issue and not an Outlook issue.

M

telnet is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program
or batch file.

As I have no problems with Internet Explorer or other network connections I
think it highly unlikely that this is a network issue. Outlook 2007 is the
only programme not working.

If you are using Vista telnet is not installed by default - you need to
install it in Control Panel-Programs and Features-Turn Windows Components on
or off.

OK - telnet appears to connect with no problems- at least it doesn't time out
- blank cmd window just appears.

You shouldn't have a blank screen - it should say something like "pop server
ready"

So - what does a blank cmd screen signify? If the problem is a network one
rather than Outlook, why does Windows Mail work OK but not Outlook?

If you get a blank screen, then you're either awaiting connection (and it
will timeout eventially) or the responses from the mail server are not
making it back for one reason or another (like routing or firewall). Since
you say Windows Mail works, compare the account settings between Outlook and
Windows Mail VERY carefully. Frankly, though, it still sounds like a
firewall issue to me, with WM being allowed, but Outlook and telnet not.
Compare the firewall entry for Windows Mail and Outlook (it there are any)
and see how they may differ. Check version specifics in the entry as well.
A firewall might allow a specific version of a program to access the
network, but not a subsequent version.

Finally got things working by completely uninstalling Panda Internet Security
(simply disabling it was insufficient). I now have to work out how to get a
security system back in place.

Try reinstalling it, but make sure you do NOT install the mail integration
features. Make sure, as well, that if it contains a firewall, that Outlook
is an exception. Verify, too, that the ports you need are open within the
firewall (depending on how much control you have).
