Outlook 2007 SP2 - Email > Display as: corrupt

Hi,

My client has a strange problem. In his Contacts folder and Addres
Book, the field Display as: is sometimes incorrect. This information i
from another Contact. It can be fixed manually by simply deleting th
incorrect information and tabbing to the next field, but my client ha
over 2000 Contact and simply doesn't have the time or patience to d
this. He is correcting contacts as he works but finds this ver
annoying.

This is what I've tried so far:
- running Inbox Repair Tool scanpst.exe
- creating a new contacts folder and copying corrupt contact
- creating a new .PST file and copying corrupt contact
- renaming *.nk2
- I would have tried to reset the Address Book, but it seems you can n
longer delete the default Outlook Address Book.
- called Microsoft Support > no solution other than manual deletion

I'm considering trying a 3rd party PST repair/recovery product.

Any solution or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Does you client by any chance sync his contact folder with anything (or
otherwise use any kind of 3rd party addon)? The EDA field gets updated by
Outlook automatically when the email address is changed or as is being done,
the field is set to blank. It also, however, can also be updated by any
program to any value and unless one of the two just mentioned conditions
occur, Outlook doesn't touch the EDA field (leastwise not under normal
conditions).

Are these random contacts - new or ones that have been in existance for a
while?

Hi Karl,

Yes, the client currently uses a couple 3rd party addons - Mapila
Duplicate Email Remover, MyFax and LBE Attachment Stripper.
He also uses a business card scanner - CardScan.
Haven't yet tested any syncing program but am definitely interested
currently copying the whole pst file to his notebook or desktop.
I pretty but not complete sure their random contacts - both old an
new.

If I was a betting person - my money would be on something <external> to
Outlook being at the root of this and not anything related to Outlook itself
given the way it works. If something was that screwed up in the PST file
structure, it would almost be guaranteed that other issues would surface
besides an incorrect value in the EDA field.

Re: Cardscan - it has a "sync" function with Outlook. What does it do when
duplicates are encountered?

Re: duplicates in general

Interesting thing about duplicate contacts .........you can scan for
duplicates in a folder (or across folders) based on some set of fields
(either pre-defined or user selectable). Taking a hypothetical scenario - a
search is done on one or more fields not including the Email DisplayAs and
FileAs fields. The "duplicates" are found based on the selected fields and
processed leaving a single contact record. There is no guarantee that the
remaining contact record has the "expected" <EmailDisplayAs> or <FileAs>
value since there is absolutely nothing in Outlook that prevents either of
those fields being manually (or programmatically) changed. Reality is that
each of the "duplicates" can in fact have a different <Email DisplayAs>
and/or <FileAs> even if fields like email address, fullname etc are part of
the fields scanned for "duplication". Outlook won't do anything to EDA or FA
unless the underlying <core> fields are changed via the UI (i.e. email
address for EDA etc) so at the end of it - which one of the "duplicate"
contacts has the "correct" EmailDisplayAs and/or FileAs values? Would it be
the one with the oldest creation date, newest creation date, latest
LastModified date or none of those?

Now this "hypothetical" situation described above is just one of several
<real> different ones that happens to come from our tests against some
customer supplied data when the CG Duplicate Contact Manager was being
tested. For the majority of people, this particular situation would remain a
"hypothetical" scenario.
