Outlook 2007 very slow to start - up to six minutes

M

Madrilleno

I am running Office 2007 SP1 and XP Pro SP3 on a fairly good spec notebook.
Up until Monday of this week, Outlook started up in << 30 seconds. Suddenly,
it takes up to 6 minutes to start and get to update.

I am running Outlook in cached exchange mode to a hosted Exchange 2003
server, and have been for over a year. It connects via RPC/HTTP. The startup
now runs thus:-

Click on the Exchange icon.
The profile choice box appears immediately.
Click on OK for the default profile
Outlook shows "Not responding" in the title bar for up to three minutes.
The password dialogue box appears and I enter my username and password.
The password box disappears and Outlook shows "Not responding" in the title
bar for up to three minutes more.
My inbox appears and starts to update from the Exchange server.
Outlook runs normally with no hang-ups or speed issues.

I have installed the profile on a second computer and do not have the same
issues, Outlook runs normally. This would suggest a machine specific problem,
rather than server or connnection.

Looking at the task manager during Outlook startup, there are no obvious
issues, with 95-98% CPU free.

Any ideas?

Hello Madrilleno,

Base on your problem description, it seems the issue occurred on your
current Outlook profile, I suggest we just create a new profile to test the
issue.

How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918

I also would like to attach the steps here for your reference:

How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2007
========
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Switch to Classic View, and then double-click Mail.
3. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles.
4. On the General tab, click Prompt for a profile to be used, and then
click Add.
5. In the Profile Name box, type a descriptive name for the new e-mail
profile, and then click OK.
6. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click Add a new e-mail account, and
then click Next.
7. Click the appropriate server type for your new e-mail account, and then
click Next.
8. Type your account information in the required boxes, and then click
Next.
9. Click Finish, and then click OK.

Please log on with your new profile and let me know the result.

If the issue persists, let's try Outlook safe mode to test the issue:

Click start, click run, type "Outlook /safe" (without quotation marks)

If there is any update, don't hesitate to post here.

The problem is exactly the same when Outlook is started in safe mode.

Active add-ins:-

Com Add-in for Microsoft Outlook Connector
Microsoft Outlook add-in for data collection and publishing
Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging
Microsoft Office Groove Proxy for Outlook plug-in
Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server Colleague Import add-in
Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service
OneNote Notes about Outlook items
Send to Bluetooth
Windows search email indexer

Inactive add-ins:-

Microsoft VBA for Outlook add-in
TMAS add-in

Disabled add-ins:-

Webex Meet Me Now add-in.

M

Madrilleno

I have disabled all active add-ins and this has not changed the startup delay.

M

Madrilleno

I have several other profiles already which use different servers, but these
all exhibit the same startup problem.

I have also already tried the /safe switch as per Roady's suggestion, with
no improvement in startup time. I addition, the problem is the same with all
add-ins disabled.

M

Madrilleno

Well, I’ve tried everything I can think of over the weekend.
1. Uninstall and reinstall Office 2k7
2. Delete the Outlook folders from Application data and Local settings
3. Delete all profiles and re-create a new one from scratch.
4. Create a new user, then create a new Outlook profile.
5. Start Outlook with all profiles deleted.
6. Start Windows XP in safe mode, with all profiles deleted.

Probably the most significant of these is number 6.

In all cases, it still takes 5 minute plus to start Outlook, so I’m certain
that this is not Outlook profile related.

M

Madrilleno

Toshiba Sattelite Pro A100, Intel Core 2 duo, 1.8Ghz, 2Gb RAM (Separate
graphics memory - it's not shared)

Add ins are listed in my first reply to Roady.

This is NOT a hadware problem, Outlook was working fine until the beginning
of last week. And no, I don't know what has changed to cause the issue,
Office 2k7 SP1 was installed several weeks ago, and XP SP3 was installed
AFTER the problem appeared in an attempt to cure it.

Hi Madrilleno,

I understand you have tried the following steps but the issue persists.

From step 3, it seems the issue was not related to current profile.

From step 6, it seems the issue was not related to usual background
software or driver.

At this time, this issue may be caused by corrupt Outlook components and
the corrupt outlook components may not be uninstalled successfully with
Add\Remove programs. I suggest we use the following article to uninstall
Office 2007 manually:

How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using
the "Add or Remove Programs" feature
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB928218

After that, please reinstall Office again and try to open Outlook.

What is the result?

If, unfortunately, the issue persists, please send me the Event logs. I can
find the root cause from recent errors.

Event Log
====
a. Click Start, click Run, input "EVENTVWR" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
b. Right click "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As",
navigate to the Desktop, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then
click save.
c. Right click "Security", with the same method as step b, save it as "sec".
d. Right click "System", with the same method, save it as "sys".
e. Locate the three saved log files on the Desktop and send them to me at
my email account (e-mail address removed) with the case ID.

Hi,

I indeed have a VERY similar problem. Outlook (2007) runs fast as ever, but in the last one or two weeks starting up takes some time where the OUTLOOK.EXE process in task manager doesn't seem to take much (or any) cpu load. I noticed that the duration of this stage is relatively constant - I measured a time of 3 minutes and 34 seconds between clicking the Outlook icon on my desktop and the first response of the kind "I can see my inbox" (my profile is not passwort protected). Deleting all of my profiles, deactivating all add-ins did not help. Repairing Office or "Outlook safe mode" didn't, either. So if 3m30 rings any bell (perhaps it reminds you of any timeout values for which-so-ever process) I hope I could have helped.

That seems like exactly what I have, although I'm not sure about the exact
time from click to start. I could do with anyone else experiencing the same
to post here so we could see how widespread this is.

Hey,

Found this post a few days back and been keeping a close eye on the results. My issue started 2weeks ago, on a 5week old top of the range laptop where outlook was running perfect before hand.

I think my issue is slightly different, I have a timeout error the first time I start outlook, it then restarts itself and loads correctly.(looked in the event logs to find all this out. It just sat with a loading screen) This all in all takes about 4minutes.

After this I can shut down outlook and all its processes and it opens as fast as ever when I re-open.

Any help would be great,

Paul

Sounds slightly different, maybe you have more than one issue on the machine.
Anyway, the support case has been promoted to an engineer level who should be
calling me on Monday.

Sorry to barge in onto this thread but I'm having the same problem with
Outlook 2007. When I run it in safe mode it loads very fast. But when I go
back and run it in regular mode it takes forever. What would be causing it
then if it works fine in safe mode? Is this an easy fix?

Slightly different symptoms, my Outlook takes the same amount of time to
start whatever the circumstances, Outlook in safe mode, computer in safe
mode, anyhow.
