Outlook 2007 will not display all results after a search

I have been trying to search for a message from a particular sender.
I put the email address in the search box for my Inbox and about 10 results
are returned but not the message I'm looking for so I clicked the 'Try
searching again in All Mail Items' option.

I am then left with a cleared screen with 'No matches found for "{name}".'
in light grey text.
Above this is a bar with the message "Your search returned a large number of
results. Narrow your search, or click here to view all results."

When I 'click here' as instructed the bar disappears and I am just left with
the 'No matches found...' message.

Why?
