Outlook 2007 won't reopen

I've had Office 2007 for more than six months, but this problem started 3
days ago. After the computer sits idle for a period of time (on but not
sleeping), when I try to re-open Outlook 2007, the egg time shows for maybe 5
seconds and then the cursor goes back to normal...but the program won't
start. In order to get Outlook to work, I have to restart the computer (P4 @
2.8GHz running Win XP Pro). I assume a conflict has been introduced; how do I
successfully trouble shoot it? I'm using a current McAfee anti-virus...but
beyond Office 2007, there are only a few other programs that have been used
since this issue began, and those programs are 100% standard fare and
current. Any thoughts?

One other note: after I re-start the computer, it asks if I want Outlook 2007
to start in "Safe" mode because it failed to open correctly on the previous
attempt.

I'll look next time it happens. Keep in mind that I'm closing it correctly
before trying to reopen (including the confirmation to erase messages upon
close). I'm also not sure that would explain why I get the "request to open
in Safe mode because it failed to open correctly on last attempt" message
upon restart. But I appreciate the suggestion.

Hi, Well I have had the same problem again only recently. I tride Dell tech
no solution. As above Outlook 2007 (I am on Vista Business) opens Ok on
startup but then if closed wont reopen. I have tried disabling the Add-Ins
but this did not help. However, on opening Task Manager found large Outlook
files even after close of outlook. Deleting the largest then allows Outlook
to open. So for some reason Task Manager wont "release" Outlook. A right
pain. Tried to compress .pst file no help. Although I have a way round its a
right pain.
Note web pages say disable the PDF Add In- In Outloook tried this as well no
success. For some reason perhaps going too quick Task Manager holds on to an
"open" outlook so it does not actually closed (Am computer novice any help
welcome)

Ok, we seem to have some way of replicating the problem. Now it is a
case of determining what actually is the cause of Outlook not actually
closing. I don't have Outlook 2007 to test, so all info will need to be
generated by others. Things to check are. Is there a Anti-virus scanning
the e-mail involved? Is there downloaded e-mail involved? Is sent e-mail
the cause? If Outlook is Opened and then closed with no "Send/Receive",
does the problem still occur?

Not sure how the previous post was sent with no text from me. What I said was
that I suspected it might have been caused by faulty virus definitions being
installed by McAfee.

That said, I did run the weekly virus scan on the computer. And I checked
Task Manager upon closing Outlook 2007, and nothing was left running. This
morning, Outlook 2007 did reopen after being closed all night with the PC
running. So perhaps McAfee was the problem...and the newer virus definiitions
installed yesterday (this program updates itself daily) did the trick. Or
maybe it was something else. Or maybe it will happen again!

Yes I see info is needed. Please excuse as I am a novice.
1. Running Vista Business with Office 2007 plenty of memory etc
2. Even when Outlook 2007 does not reopen the CPU use is still low - less
than 20%
3. On a startup or restart Outlook 2007 behaves fine and using "sleep" works
OK. The problem arises when if instead of minimising Outlook 2007 in a
session it is closed (or as I suspect it's attempting to close)
4. What happens is if you try to reopen it wont start up ordinary or safe
mode.
5. No this does not seem to be tied to any particular action/operation etc
of outlook 2007. I have tried closing before sending etc etc. No, no AV
running or anything else odd. No download email involved. Tried all the
things in Bob I notes makes no difference
6. After a trial and error and things like disabling/removing add-ins (made
no difference) had a look at task manager and when notionally closed found
two large Outlook files still in task manager, removed both of these and lo
and behold Outlook 2007 opens fine. Until the next attempted closure. I did
try waiting to see if Task Manager "released" Outlook after say 10mins answer
NO.
7.You get a message do you want to open in Safe Mode but no point. I did go
the loop. Also tried "repairing" Outlook installation.
8. So what I conclude is that for whatever reason Task Manager does not
"release"
Outlook and therefore its not really closed just stuck in limbo.
9. Yes you can replicate this so there are two methods of getting outlook to
reopen, restarting when of course Task Manager has "released" Outlook OR
simply deleting the Outlook file in Task Manager each time when we have lift
off.
10 So my ? is what do I need to do to get Task Manager to release Outlook.

Perhaps you also have McAfee A-V with faulty virus definitions? Please
see post by rsnadel in this thread.

Unfortunately, the original problem occurred again yesterday...which suggests
it's not the McAfee anti-virus software.

But you had a period of time where it did close properly. So is there
any other changes that were done at that point in time? McAfee has some
"Office plugin" if I recall correctly. Is that disabled? Is Word being
used as the Editor in Outlook?

B

bcwinch

There is NIL McAfee Office Plug in or anything else McAffee listed in search
and never was. As to is Word the editor I dont know how to tell if this is
true or not but certainly I have not changed anything. It worked OK from time
I bought new PC with Vista on in Feb 2007 until beginning on Sept 2007 then
suddenly would not restart in session without without deletinf the process
file in Task Manager.

B

Bob I

Ok, what happened Sept 2007 just before this started? Did you install
some update for Vista? Some update for your A-V? Something else?

Bob I thanks for trying to help
1. Answer to both I guess I dont know because Microsoft does auto updates
and I just accept these and frankly would not easily know what these all are
similar for liveonecare updates. As to a more general ? what I have added
answer Nil as I use my PC for business and its mainly Access, Excel, Word. I
have also tried disabling startups in System Config but no joy. Brian

Bob I

For what it's worth, you may set your Folder Options to show Hidden and
System files and folder, then you may look in the Windows folder for the
"uninstall" folders. If you set it to Details view, you may Sort by Date
and see what "updates" were installed at that point in time based on the
"uninstall" folder date for it.

Maybe you are using a synchronize program for your mobile? If yes, stop
that/disable it and restart outlook (minimal 2 times).

I had the same problem. After reinstalling and updating Outlook 2007 (did not solve teh problem), digging in some forums I came to the conclusion that it must be a plug-in/addon. After switching of the plugins one by one It found the problem to be the new Linkedin plugin. I now will try to reinstall this plugin a see what happens.
