Outlook 2007 works poorly with msn

My Outlook 2007 keeps reporting itself to be 'Offline' and 'cannot find
server' in this case the msn servers.
Meanwhile my system is connected to the Internet and everything else works
fine whilst this 'offline' condition is reported.
Changing from Inbox to Sent Items takes up to a minute with msn but is
instant with outher mail sources.
What has gone wrong?
All Office diagnostics show a clean system. This is repeated across all of
the 3 PCs I use regularly so it not a single PC with a querk!

if it's reproducible across 3 systems it's probably something on msn's side.
