outlook 2007

i do not understand when it asks u too put in the names then it says
everytime cannot connect to server ty

when it says microsft exchange server then u have to put something in the box
underneath then it says mailbox in the bottom one i have put my email in the
top one i put hotmail so can u tell me what i am doing wrong plz ty alan

what type of mail server?
