Yes you can upgrade and it is definitely worth the bother. You can upgrade
to Office XP/Outlook 2002 as the latest upgrade for which you qualify
directly. If you wait until the release of Office System 2003 is announced,
you can probably upgrade to Office XP and receive a "technology guarantee"
which Microsoft typically offers to people who purchased the last verison
just prior to the release of the newest version.
I am not sure, however, that Office 97 would be an eligible upgrade path for
Office System 2003 directly, however. For examply, Office XP had qualifying
products stop at Office 97 and 2000. It would seem reasonable to limit the
upgrade for the next version to Office 2000 and XP.
