Outlook 97 + Win XP = crazy MAPI

I have recently deployed 15 new XP Pro boxes in the
office, almost all of which are running Office 97. On 2
of these machines, the MAPI spooler will occasionally
startup and use the entire CPU resources in it's attempt
to hit the e-mail server, slowing the machine to a
crawl. In this case i have to kill the user account on
the server and start a new one to cure the problem, but
it's only temporary and then at odd intervals the problem
will re-occur.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing office to no
avail and most recently replacing the MAPI files from
another machine that is running correctly.
The patch it seems has been to upgrade those individuals
to Outlook 2K, which doesn't use the MAPI process. (or at
least it never shows up in the task manager) But i know
there is a problem here i cannot solve. Any ideas?
