Outlook abends

B

Bob

Hi,

After moving an XP workstation with Office 2003 over to a new domain, I find
that Outook will fail when any user attempts to do various setup tasks. In
the error example below, Outlook will restart if the user attempts to change
their signature.

The problem is isolated to this one machine. New profiles don't help. The
user can log onto another workstation and adjust their signature just fine,
but once they return to the failing machine, the bug is back. I've run
Office "repair" from the Add Remove Programs, but that didn't help either.

Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks!

Hi Bob,

Perform the steps below to see if it works.

#1 check the file "c:\windows\WindowsShell.Manifest"
============
This file is a hidden file. If this file is missing, such an issue will occur (Error Event: 1000 in Application log for Outlook refers to Module:
user32.dll).

Go to the folder c:\windows\ to check if the file is existing. If not, please copy this file from another working machine to this failing
machine.

If it doesn't fix the issue, go to next step.

#2 test the issue under Outlook safe mode
===========
Exit Outlook.
Click Start > Run > type outlook /safe, click OK.
Test the issue. What is the result?

#3 create a new local user account on the computer to test the issue.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin

Thanks Emily,

The "c:\windows\WindowsShell.Manifest" was missing as you thought. That
fixed it.

I find about 25 files in "c:\windows" that have invalid file names similar
to "??b???b" etc. They are all around 20 to 90 KB in size. I guess the
machine has some file corruption on it.

Hello Bob,

Appreciate your update and response. I am glad to hear that the problem has been fixed.

I understand that there might be problems on the Windows system. You can refer to the following KB article to repair/reinstall Windows
XP to see if it is helpful.

If not, post it in the Windows XP newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.general. Hope everything will be fine soon.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. It is always my pleasure to be of assistance.

Have a nice day!
