Outlook alters attached Word documents - PGP Verification Fails

Greets,

So here's the deal. I've stumbled onto an odd issue that is very easy to
duplicate for others to verify it's legitimicy. I'm now trying to figure out
how to stop this behavior. If anyone has any ideas on how to resolve it, let
me know. :)

When you are using Outlook 2003 to compose a new message, from the new
message window you attach a MS Word .doc file, and send the message, Outlook
alters the attached file. It adds approximately 3K to the file, however, its
unclear what exactly is modified. Unless you are really looking closely,
you'd never notice it. The only reason I started looking closer is because
PGP signed Word docs were failing verification. :) Note: I am not using
word as the email editor, in fact I am using plain text formatting. Using
"windiff", I can definitely see a difference at the beginning and end of the
file.

Now, if you use Explorer to send an attachment (for example right click a
file on your desktop, send to, mail recipient), it opens your default mail
application and attaches the document for you. But get this, the attachment
is not altered doing it this way! It's only changed when you attach a doc
from within Outlook.

ZIP files of course are not changed, so zipping a word doc leaves it intact.
I also have not been able to test this out using office XP or 2000.

Anyone know if there's some hidden option or registry change to stop this?

Many thanks in advance.
