Outlook always on top

I am having problems with outlook. When it opens it seems to default to an
'always on top' mode. When I double click on an e-mail it opens but behind
the default screen - I need to minimize the default screen, review the e-mail
close it, maximize the default screen and repeat the whole proceedure for
every e-mail.
It get's even more difficult when the "out of office" assistant is turned on
as I cannot get anything to open as the 'turn off' option screen is behind
the default screen but the default screen cannot be minimized.
How can I overcome this?
