outlook and imap

I am running an IMAP server on a local lan, and am trying
to connect outlook to it. I have tried all versions of
outlook from 2000 to 2003, and keep having the same
problem.

The outlook clients keep timing out causing them to
disconnect from the server or crash.

All other clients do not have this problem inc outlook
express. I have tried several IMAP servers, and in all
cases outlook fails.

Someone suggested that the problem is that the IMAP server
on a lan responds to fast for outlook, causing the error.
To test this i connected outlook 2003 to our IMAP server
over a DSL connection, and there was no error.

There are numerous posts on the web documenting this, but
am yet to come accross a solution.

I have downgraded out email clients to outlook express,
but really want to upgrade them all to outlook 2003, if i
can find a solution to this.

I have tried connecting the outlook clients (from within
the lan) to the IMAP servers external IP address, to try
to add some kind of delay but this did not work.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... outlook
2003 is great, and i dont have sufficient funds to upgrade
to exchange as it is overkill for our needs.

kind regards,

jack
