Outlook and Norton Security

I'm using Outlook 2002 and NIS 2005, everything has always worked fine until
today when I suddenly started getting this message:

Task 'Hilsdon - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator
or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I had made no changes to anything. After a while I discovered that if I
disabled NIS then Outlook worked fine. Does anyone have any idea what may
have happened and more importantly what I can do to fix it?

it could be an update to NIS or temporary problems with the mail server.

I know it's not the mail server as I pull in email from different accounts
and they both have the same problem.

In Mick <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Just an idea... It could very well be an update to NIS that's causing the
problems. I have no idea, I don't use Symantec products unless I have to,
but somewhere you might have an option to disable automatic email scanning.
If you have real-time virus protection enabled already then enabling email
virus scanning not only does no additional good but it also causes more
problems than it's worth. I'd root about inside your application, find any
mail options, and disable them and see if the problem continues. Keep in
mind that you will still have real time protection enabled on the OS itself
with your NIS if you only disable the automatic email functionality so you
are still as safe as you'd be with it turned on. Follow, of course, the
basic rules of not opening strange attachments but your regular protection
should easily prevent that from happening if it's a problematic attachment.

It is exactly what Galen wrote. In NIS's Options disable email scanning (in
and out). As long as Auto Protect is on, you're quite safe.

That should solve your problem. It is NOT a server issue as the error
message suggests.

OK, I've turned the email scanning off and it now works.

I wonder why it chose to suddenly stop working like that?

Thanks for your help.

Probably because your AV program performed an autoupdate and the update
caused the problem.
