Outlook and Outlook Express...

Hello everyone,

I am running WinXP Pro Version 2002 with Service Pack 2 installed, Outlook
Express 6, and Outlook 2003.

I was wondering would it be a problem running OE 6 and Outlook
simultaneously? I've been running OE 6 but would like to start using
Outlook, since the Smartphone I'll be getting requires Outlook. Should
there be anything I should be concerned of or watch for running the two
above mentioned programs simultaneously?

I run both Outlook 2002 and Outlook Express 6 at the same time. I don't
leave them up and running continuously but they are often concurrently
active. The concern is if you define the same account in each e-mail
client. If you have Outlook and OE up at the same time and each has the
same account(s) defined then the mails will go to whichever e-mail client
polls an account first. So I have Outlook poll my personal and business
accounts and I have Outlook Express poll my accounts used for forums,
newsgroups, disccussion boards, newsletters, etc. I have 6 accounts defined
in Outlook and 4 accounts defined in Outlook Express and there is no
duplicated accounts in either one.

If you want to poll the same accounts in multiple e-mail clients, you'll
have to configure each to "leave messages on server". That means you
download a copy of the e-mail but you don't tell the mail server to delete
its copy. The e-mail program keeps track of which mails it downloaded
before so it won't download them again. Other e-mail clients will see those
previously read messages as new messages and also download a copy, so you
could end up with the same message showing up in multiple e-mail clients.
Outlook has options regarding how long a "left on server" message will
remain on the mail server and what happens when you choose to delete it
locally.

Thanks for the reply...but if I choose to just use Outlook how do I get all
my email messages and address book contacts moved from OE 6 to Outlook 2003?

To move the contents, install and configure Outlook correctly, then click
File>Impoort and Export>Import Internet Mail and Addresses>Next. Select
Outlook Express, uncheck "Import Mail" and "Import Rules" (or leave "Import
Rules" checked if you have rules to move, but do NOT check "Import Mail"),
click Next, select the duplicate handling you want, and click Finish.

To move the mail, in Outlook Express, click File>Export>Messages. then OK.
Select the folders you want to export, then click OK.
