outlook attachment will not open in Word

I am using outlook 2003. My option is set to use Word to open my attachments.
When I get and email with attachments, and I try to open the attachment, all
I see is garbage.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Yes, these are word documents. My word attachments are opening in word pad
and this gives me unreadable document. My option is set to use word to open
my attachments.

is the attachment a document type word can open?
