Outlook attachments getting corrupted

Outlook 2003 w/SP1, on WinXP Pro SP2

I'm having an intermittent problem with incoming file attachments getting
corrupted. This occurs with any type of file, including various Office
documents.

I don't believe it's occuring in transit through the mail gateways since the
same attachments downloaded on another pc has no problems, and about 25% of
the attachments received on the problem system comes through fine.

I've already reinstalled office several times, including using system
restore to format the HD and reinstall everything. I've been told that this
was a known issue with OE... has anyone experienced this with Outlook and
what was done to fix the problem?

What are the symptoms of the attachment corruption?
What antivirus or antispam software are you running?
What kind of mail account are you using?
Where is your PST file located? Local, on this PC, or on a network drive?

The usual error msgs were "there was an error open the file... ... could not
be repaired"

All emails received via POP3 accounts (no Exchange server), with pst fie
residing on the local drive. Win Firewall diabled and no antivirus software
installed (the drive was scanned for viruses, just in case).

Per the PC mfr's support suggestion, I booted up in safe mode with
netowrking support and the problems disappeared. OS is XP Tablet PC edition,
which I suspect has some OEM "stuff" added onto it. Unfortunately, I gave up

Unfortunately, I gave up on the machine due to myriad of other issues
that occured after the email issue, so didn't persue the hunt for
suspect background process route.

Might want to try running Outlook once from the Run line with the /safe
switch.....see if that's OK. Check for add-ins if this works - after
re-starting Outlook in normal mode.
