Outlook Attachments not opening when AntiVir Guard activated

I have read all the existing posts over the years for why Outlook Attachments
fail to open and instead pop-up the System32 directory explorer. I have
checked Outlook Security using regedit and it is configured correctly. I have
checked file type associations. Stating this upfront because this behavior is
different.

Running Outlook 2000 SR-1 on Win2000 with all the latest upgrades.

I had been running Norton Antivirus 2005, but some of its behaviour annoyed
me and I removed it. Then I installed Avira's AntiVir (PersonalEdition
Classic), which I've used successfully on XP systems. I do not know if the
problems are related to removing NAV, or the way AntiVir works.

If I have AntiVir activated and attempt to open an email attachment in
Outlook, I get the Open/Save dialog, but the filename is blank. If I choose
Open, I get the Explorer window for the System32 directory. Save does not
work either, because it doesn't have a filename or a type.

Now I deactivate AntiVir and do the same thing. When I open the attachment -
poof - it opens in the correct application. No problem.

Now I reactivate AntiVir and the problem returns.

I also have a message posted to the AntiVir discussion group, but there have
been no answers or "me too" posts.

Any ideas? Similar experiences with Outlook/AntiVir interaction?
