Outlook causes SVCHOST to monopolize CPU

I have recently upgraded to Office 2003. It ran fine for several days, but suddenly, I had problems syncronizing with my Exchange server. Now,when I start Outlook, my system slows to a crawl. The SVCHOST process is utilizing 98-99% of my cpu resources. Even if I terminate outlook, svchost eats these cpu cycles until I reboot.

I've run virus scans and ad aware with up to date defintion files - no problems detected. Tries to remove and reinstall office and ercreated ost and pst files - same results.

Any ideas on root causes or next steps in problem diagnosis would be appreciated.

Some additional info. I removed Office 2003 and installed Office XP. Everything was running fine (other than I had to recreate an OST file - formats are differnet). I then upgraded to Office 2003 and the problem returned.
