Outlook closes down

I have been getting messages with many _ . When I highlight one of them
Outlook closes down. I found I could delete them by clicking one legit
message and then grouping them. Now, each time I try to open Outlook it
opens, but immediately closes down. I am running on XP and have AVG for
anti-virus.
