Outlook Configuration POP3 - things that make me go hmmm.

I have 4 pop3 accounts configured in outlook 2003 on my laptop.

I was on another company's network. Looking at the configuration of another
persons email, on a different computer, also pop3, i noticed "localhost" was
entered into the POP3 Server field. Hmm. Furthermore the POP3 server was
added into the User Name field with a slash seperating the User Name and the
POP3 Server.

For example: the POP3 server is pop.abc.com and the User Name is jcool.

The POP3 field had the entry: localhost
The User Name field had the entry: jcool/pop.abc.com

Email was seemingly sending and recieving ok. After I detached my laptop
from that network and brought it back to my office I noticed the same
configuration on all 4 of my pop email accounts. Seemingly the email was
working ok at first. Then I believe there was a problem with send/recieve
which prompted me to check out the configuration. My configuration had been
changed as well. Not by any human though.

I thought maybe it was related to connecting via VPN, but that did not seem
to make a difference. I went back to the network and noticed that more than
one computer was configured with the "localhost" entry into the POP3 server
field. I cannot figure out why this is happening?

Usually it's antivirus software or a proxy server that changes the server
names. I might be wrong but I think newer versions of that type of software
have stopped using the localhost idea, or else it can be disabled.
