Outlook Connector: new mail notification not working

I have Outlook Connector installed with Outlook 2003, using a windows live
account. When a new mail message is received, I do NOT receive a new mail
message notification. I have confirmed that the notifications are enabled
through tools,options. Additionally, I have also tried to create a rule that
would generate a notification when a new message is received. This does not
work either. Finally, when messages are received and unread in Outlook, they
no longer trigger an unread mail count on the Windows XP Pro login screen
(when the hotmail account was set up as an http account unread messages would
appear on the login screen).

This appears to be a bug with Outlook Connector. Is anyone else experiencing
this problem or know of a fix?

The New Mail notification only works when mail is being delivered to your
default delivery location. I assume that in your case the storage folder for
the Live account is a secondary delivery location?

As for the Unread Count; do you have the account also configured with
another mail application or are you using it for Windows Live Messenger? In
that case, that application will keep the Unread Count score and not
Outlook.

Thanks for your reply. Based on your response I understand that the New Mail
notification will only work with my default delivery location. You are
correct that the Live account is being delivered to a secondary location (not
primary pst file/inbox).

However, it seems to me that when creating a rule and applying to my Live
account, should also work, unless the New Item Alert window also only applies
to my default delivery location?

In regards to the Unread Count, I'm only using Outlook 2003, and it is my
default email program. Prior to installing the Outlook Connector I accessed
my Live account as a http account, and all new messages were reflected in the
unread mail count on the login screen. Perhaps this is a bug in Connector, or
is something configured wrong? Thanks for your help.

FYI, as a workaround I found the following (using Roady's response as a hint):

I installed Windows Live Messenger. This fixed/addressed all my issues. When
my Live account receives a new email, I receive an alert/pop up in the
taskbar from Messenger. This is instantaneous (whereas I would have to wait
for Outlook to process the next scheduled send/receive to receive the new
message).

Additionally, now my unread mail count is reflected correctly on the login
screen.

My guess is there is a bug with Outlook Connector that prevents Outlook from
capturing the unread mail count. The only downside to the above workaround is
another process running in the background.
