Outlook Contacts problem

I have Outlook 2003 and recently all my contacts disappeared from it. They
were totally deleted. However, when I click in the TO box, and start typing
the addresses are there. The question I have is this: I tried doing a
Detect and Repair on Outlook. That completed normally. I then tried right -
clicking on the contact name and choosing "Save As Contact". That's when I
get an error message that states:

The name or distribution list has been deleted and is no longer a
valid Address Book entry. Unable to add recipient to Contacts. An internal
support function returned an error.

Does someone know what may be the cause of this error? Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The auto-fill/resolution cache is separate from your contacts hence the
reason why you still see names when you start typing an address. Did you
somehow delete your Contacts folder? What happens you open that folder?

When I open the Contacts folder, only 3 names remained out of the many that
were stored. When I try to add some of the addresses back in, autocomplete
comes up and it gives me the same error message. I've never run into that
problem before.

Auto-complete shouldn't pop up while you're adding contact records. Where
are you adding them in? From the contact folder or elsewhere?

Actually, it does. The email field in a Contact Record is one of the fields
that brings up the autocomplete dropdown. Obviously the autocompletion cache
would remain even though the Contacts have gone missing.

What I'm wondering is what caused Contact Records to disappear in the first
place. If they aren't in the Deleted Items Folder, I'd suspect a
synchronization error. Wonder if the OP backs up his data.

No I don't back up my data. I didn't plan for the worst this time. The
question why can't I just right-click and add those contacts in from the
cached autocomplete lists back in? It would simplify the recovery of them
for me. And why wouldn't a Detect and Repair process correct the issue with
the Contacts folder? It sounds to me like there is a partial corruption of
the database storing the address book/contact list. Is that possible?

Because the autocompletion cache has no connection whatsoever to your
Contacts Folder. Obviously it will let you select the addresses it contains
one by one as you recreate each Contact Record. You can also purchase a
third party utility that will create Contacts from your autocompletion
cache.
No one can figure out how you lost your Contacts without more information.
Outlook does not do this. There is no address book in Outlook--only Contacts
Folders. The address book view is simply a view of your Contacts Folder. So
the data that you lost is from your Contacts Folder. There is no corruption
of the address book view. You would do well to review the steps that created
or preceded this problem so you can take steps to avoid it.
Detect and Repair has nothing to do with your data files. It only repairs
the installation. If you value your data files, you back them up. In no way
is the autocompletion cache a substitute for backing up your Contact data.

Hello,

If you are stuck in the issue, try out some third party tools for PST recovery. Googling will help you out. One such software is Kernel for Outlook software for outlook recovery and outlook repair.

To use this utility, you need to list your mailbox PST file, scan it and it will recover your contacts from the PST file.

PST files are database of MS Outlook which stores every mailbox item. If you do not know the location of PST file then search it in your drives with inbuilt search option, type *.PST and it will list the file.
Software will recover every contact item and save it to new PST file. Give a try to the demo version which will let you know if it works for you or not. if it works, then you can purchase the full version:

You can try to recover your contacts with Easy Mail Recovery software:

The program uses original algorithms that assist in the recovery of a
maximum number of messages even if the mail client cannot open the
message database.
