Outlook contacts, where are they saved?

Are they not automatically saved to a .pst file? I went ahead and attempted
to backup my friend's data and copied it over to an external hard drive.
Upon transferring the data back his contacts aren't showing up. Did I have
to MANUALLY export them to a .pst file? Shouldn't they automatically be
apart of the rest of the data in the .pst file?

Contacts are, yes. Perhaps he was using a Personal Address Book (.PAB)
rather than Contacts? Personal Address Book is a separate .PAB file.

Verify you used the correct file.
