outlook cpu stays at %50

When I start outlook the initial cpu is minimal. It will go to approx.
%50 during a send/receive cycle. After a while it will stay at %50. If
I normally terminate outlook with file/exit an instance of outlook
stays running and continues to use %50. I have to kill the instance in
the task manager and then restart it.

Can anyone provide an information regarding this problem?

I am running Outlook 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2

Do you have any addins or desktop search software installed?

I do have spambayes installed which provides spam filtering. I have had
this installed for over a year. I guess it makes sense to uninstall all
add-ins and see if the behavior is the same.

Have you been able to fix your problem? I am having the same experience with
Outlook 2003 and XP. Outlook opens and then hangs. Am running Norton
Antivirus, but was doing fine with it - if you have figured anything out,
please let me know. Thanks.

Best advise in your case, uninstall/reinstall Norton. Sometimes the e-mail
integration feature goes bozo and it is the only way to fix... till the next
time that is.

By the way, if you have been killing the Outlook process via task manager.
Make sure you run the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) against your *.pst
file(s). If you don't, Outlook 2003 will run thru a maintenance routine
right at startup. This could be interpreted as a hang while it checks the
PST.

Where do I find the file scanpst.exe? Outlook will send messages ok but seems
to be trying to download messages and takes forever and then times out.

For an English system, you will find scanpst.exe @:
\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

Again, uninstall antivirus or if the product permits disabling that
integration, do it to see if the situation improves.

I'm still working on it. at the moment I'm getting by with just killing
it when I see continued usage.
It is strange that on some days it occurs more often than others.

As other posts suggest I will probably reinstall norton and spambayes,
which is a great spam filter, and then if that doesn't work reinstall
Outlook.
