Outlook cpu utilization

Outlook 2003 SP3 seems to be using up to 50% cpu utilization on a 2Ghz
Core2Duo with XP SP2. It is set to look for POP mail every 5 minutes but the
cpu load seems to be continual. What is going on here?

I turned it off! Outlook is not checking for mail at all and it is tilll
taking up more than 20% of the cpu???
