Outlook .doc attachments won't open because of problem with winword.exe

WindowsXP sp3 + Office2003 sp3 + symantec AV 10.1

User tries to open .doc files and Word doesn't display. Creating a new
message opens Word correctly. If I kill winword.exe in Task Manager the
attachments then load with the new instance of winword.

The user got a new computer 2 days ago and had this problem prior too. He
does not have admin rights and Word has no addins.

Ideas?
