Outlook Does Not Really Close When I Close It

I'm at my wits end.

Most of the time, Outlook 2007 apparently does not close when I think I've
closed it; and then when I reopen the program it doesn't open correctly. I
get an error message that says a "data file" did not close properly. The app
still opens but when I click on a specific email it doesn't show the email
contents in the right view pane.

I want to learn to use Office Accounting and Business Contacts Manager but
hesitate to do so in case it can't be resolved. I'll have to abandon Outlook
altogether.

I have responded to the inquiry from the MSFT error page that opens telling
me to describe the error, but my two dozen or more responses have received no
response.

The popular reason why the outlook.exe process sticks around is that
ActiveSync (the software for syncing with devices) keeps it alive.
