Outlook doesn't survive PC standby

Willy Verwoerd

For many years I have been able to leave my PC in standby mode, restart it
and continue using Outlook normally. That is, when I resumed my work Outlook
would download email without any problems.

In the last four or five months or so this is no longer the case. After I
return from standby Outlook will not download my email. I have to restart it
and then everything works fine again as long as my PC is switched on.

My error message is "Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation
timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server."

I use Outlook 2003 with the latest service pack on a single laptop computer
with POP3 and SMTP mail transfer. I connect to the Internet through a wired
or wireless LAN.

I have tried disabling my firewall and antivirus software and greatly
increasing the timeout limit without success. When checking the Outlook log
it seems that Outlook doesn't even get as far as talking to the POP server.

I have extensively searched the Internet without any luck, so I hope
somebody here knows the problem and is able to help. I suspect this may be
some sort of connection problem, maybe introduced after some update from
Microsoft (I install all automatic updates) - but that's just speculation.

Another new phenomenon, related or not, is that Outlook doesn't close down
properly anymore. Everything looks OK, but when I check Task Manager the
process OUTLOOK.EXE is still there. If I just restart Outlook I'll end up
with several OUTLOOK.EXE's after having stopped and started the program a
couple of times.

Thanks for any help!

Best regards,

Your additional issue is highly related. I suspect one of your add-ins is
causing the issue. For more info see;

Note that disabling your virus scanner isn't the same as disabling its
integration with Outlook. See the documentation of your virus scanner on how
to properly disable its integration with Outlook.
