i was typing a new message in outlook. somehow i ended up in edit mode and
i'm not sure how i got there. the problem is that i can't get out. Every
time i open a 'new message' it comes up in edit mode with all of the
parigraph marks, dots for spaces, ect. but i can't get back to view mode.
is there a hot key or some menu selection to switch back to vew mode?

control-shift-8.

But it isn't 'edit mode' vs 'view mode'. It's simply show/hide hidden characters
(or something).

thank you..it works whatever it's called! I can't imagine how I ever got
into the 'show hidden characters ' screen but when it happened hitting the
'undo' button did not change things back to normal. the MS office help was
not helpful either.

Well, you likely hit control-shift-8, since that's just a toggle.

The thing with Office Help is that you have to know what it's called; if
you look for "edit mode" you won't find what you are looking for, but if
you search for "paragraph marks", it will give you the answer right away
