Outlook - Exchange Server Mail Accounts

Interesting situation with an exchange mailbox.

A user went home and installed a VPN client on his home PC. He then
configured his email in Outlook 2003. He hit send/receive and his mailbox was
populated with all of his mail...PERFECT!!!

This morning he comes to work and his entire mailbox is empty???

Yes, I realize that using a webmail/pop3 account gives you the opportunity
to "keep a copy of message on server", but this should not even be an issue
with an exchange account. Mail is, by default, stored on the Exchange Server
until the user deletes the message.

Does anyone have a clue as to WHY this happened?
