Outlook.exe - application error

When closing Outlook 2002 (SP3), I am consistently getting a "ghost" of the
"look for" and "search in" fields in the upper left of my monitor. soon
after, if the pc is idle, I will get an error message:

Outlook application.exe - application error
"The instruction at "0x35169137" referenced memory at "0x.......". The
memory could not be read." (note: referenced memory changes while instruction
remains the same.)

If immediately following closing Outlook , I reinvoke it and then
immediately close it again, the "ghost" will go away.

I am only assuming the issues are related. I don't know if simply
re-installing will correct this or if another solution is easier/better. I
appreciate your help.

When you exit Outlook, is there a remnant outlook.exe process still
listed in the Processes tab of Task Manager?

What happens when you load Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe
/safe") which will not load any add-ons installed for Outlook?

1) after closing Outlook, it is briefly listed as a process in Task Manager

2) the remnant does not appear in safe mode

To add to the original question, sometimes re-invoking Outlook just after
closing will cause the Outlook window to open and then immediatly close,
without a remnant, and without me "closing" Outlook.
