outlook.exe background process

After closing Outlook 2000, the background process of
outlook.exe remains open and hogs a lot of resources,
using a large amount of CPU time and RAM.

Why does this happen? Is there a way to automatically
have it close when I close Outlook? Please respond to my
e-mail, using Outlook 2000 in the subject line.

Assuming you've run Detect/Repair and applied updates, inc win*
Its often caused by a Com addin, disable addins and test. Then enable one at
a time, and retest.
May also be caused by other software, eg fax, interacting with OL
