OUTLOOK.EXE process does not end automatically

I have a computer that is running Win2K with SP-4, and I
have Office 2000 installed on it. If I leave Outlook open
for several hours, and then close it, the Outlook window
will disappear, however, the OUTLOOK.EXE process is still
running. Which means I cannot re-open Outlook until I go
to the task manager, and manually end the process. If I
just have it open for a few minutes to check my email, the
process ends automatically when I close it. I only have
the problem when I leave it open for several hours. Does
anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this? I have tried
to uninstall Office and then re-install it, and I have
tried Detect and Repair, both haven't fixed the problem.

Thanx

Where are you accesing your email from? i.e. are you
running Outlook over an internet link to an Exchange
Server? Or are you running it, connecting to an Internet
Service Provider for POP email as and when?

I've only experienced the problem you mention when email
is accessed remotely, i.e. connecting to Exchange over an
internet link. I guess it's some kind of timing issue
where you've closed Outlook, but the program still thinks
it's connected to the server, you'll find that MAPI32.EXE
is still running as well which is also a related file. As
far as I'm aware there's no fix for this problem. Although
I'm sure M$ would encourage you to update your office
installation so that you're running the latest service
pack and have installed all the subsequent patches. Worth
a go though. At least then you can truly moan at them
about it!

Thank you Solutions guy, thanks for your comments, and
suggestions, I will try the Service packs on it.

You''l find this problem effects a lot of people, other than probs caused by
Com addins and third party software interacting with OL, eg Fax, There
does'nt appear to be a definative resolution.
I have this prob. but at least its intermittant. Usually caused if I create
a new msg, without implicitly opening OL to do it.
