Outlook Express folders keep growing after messages are deleted.

I back up my Outlook Express 6.0 messages by copying them to a separate
folder. But I've noticed that the folder sizes keep growing AFTER messages
have been deleted.

For instance, I recently deleted a TON of old messages -- 4,697 of them to
be exact -- and then I made sure to empty the Deleted Items folder.

But when I backed up the *.dbx files AFTER the Deleted Items folders was
(allegedly) emptied, I note that the backup of my Deleted Items folder has
grown almost ten-fold from 85MB to 830MB !!

Likewise, my Inbox now has half the messages it held previously -- yet its
size has INCREASED from 184MB to 201MB.

Another folder which previously held 1,524 messages now contains only 167
messages -- yet its size has INCREASED from 539MB to 574MB.

If I may quote Mr. Spock, "This is ILLOGICAL".

How can folders that have had messages deleted continue to grow?!?!?

Since Outlook Express is not a part of Office, you will be better off
posting your question in the Outlook Express newsgroup.

I looked all over the site but was unable to find an Outlook Express
newsgroup -- only for Outlook.

Where would I find Outlook Express??

It's under Internet Explorer.
BUT - you would be FAR better off using OE as a news reader rather than the
awful web access.

Setting up Outlook Express to access Microsoft newsgroups

Accessing the MS newsgroups in Outlook Express Newsreader

As Gordon states, you'd be much better offusing OE as your newsreader. Even
Google Groups is preferable. That's what I use when I need to research
something for myself. MUCH easier than Microsoft's interface.

You need to compact OE before backing up as the deleted mails leave an
empty space that still occupies space ;-)
