Not sure how this is a Word application error, but...
In OE go to tools > options
There is a section "default messaging programs" at the bottom of the General
tab of the Options dialogue; click "make default" next to "this application
is not the default mail handler"

But why would you want to use OE when you have Outlook proper installed? Do
you use WordPad rather than Word, too?

Try opening Outlook and going to Tools, Options, Other tab and clear the
checkbox 'Make Outlook the default Program for Email, Contacts and
Calendar'. I didn't suggest this last time because I have never noticed it
before and wonder what the hell it is doing hidden under 'Other' tab! It
must also conflict with the settings in Control Panel, Internet Options.

So how can Outlook show up if Outlook isn't installed. That just doesn't
make sense!
