I have been running Outlook Express 6.x for a long time. After I downloaded
the 60-day trial version of MS Office 2003 (updating the existing MS Office
2000 software), Outlook Express (OLEXP) would not function correctly: the
Address Book would not open (the error mesage indicated it is not installed
correctly); outgoing messages could not be created (Error message read --
"There is an error opening this message. An error has occurred."); and the
text of a message could not be expanded when the subject was double-clicked.
I researched the KB articles and found that Article ID: 310873 matched, but
was written for OLEXP 5.0, rather than OLEXP 6.0. However, I followed steps
detailed in the Resolution (removed OLEXP, edited the Registry entry, and
attempted to reinstall OLEXP 6.0 from the Windows XP Installation CD (several
times), but was unsuccessful. Currently I do not have e-mail access.
