Outlook fails to actually "exit"

_adrian

Hi all. I'm running Outlook 2003 on XP Pro, and recently when I exit outlook
either via the X in the corner or File -> Exit, the program disappears from
my desktop and systray, but actually remains TSR as a running process. This
is a new behavior/problem and is really causing me headaches.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to correct it?

I tried running the re-install/repair process with my Office 2003
installation CD, but I'm getting an error saying that the installation
source can't be found (????? - isn't it on the CD in the drive??) so I dont'
know if its hung upon a CAB somewhere or what. Probably completely unrelated
problem [sigh]

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

If you start Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe") and then
exit Outlook, does the outlook.exe process disappear from the
Processes tab in Task Manager? If so, you have an add-on that is not
exiting. Outlook loads and then has to load all the add-ons. If an
add-on crashes on loading then it can cause Outlook to exit or hang.
Outlook unloads all add-ons before it exits. If an add-on crashes on
unloading it, Outlook will crash or hang. So the stability of add-ons
will affect the stability of Outlook.

Do you have the Google Search Bar installed? As soon as I uninstalled
that, it got rid of this problem

Link does not work.

Does for me.

Working today...didn't work yesterday.

Did you do a traceroute to deterine if you had a usable route to reach
that host? Any hop in the route between you and the destination that
is unresponsive will make the host just as unreachable as if the host
itself were powered off.

The OP was asking about Outlook, not about Internet Explorer.

Excuse me! I know that!

If you have Google Search installed, when you close Outlook, it doesn't
close due to indexing of E-Mails. When you start Outlook you get the
"Outlook didn't close properly and will repair etc" message.

That all went away when Google Search uninstalled

Hmm.. now Outlook is doing the same thing on my notebook.. did Microsoft
push out something that's causing this with one of their updates? I've not
installed any new apps during this time!

I would try this.. but don't know how to open outlook in /safe mode?
Help?

Start>Run. Enter

outlook.exe /safe

(with the space) in the Open field. Click OK.

Hi....

I have had this problem for a certian periode of time, and have tried many
approaches to solve it.
However....
Last week I shut down Skype because the installation of Wamp Server said
something is blocking port 80, and suggested that the purpetrator was Skype.
Since then no problem shutting down Outlook 2007
It has behaved well...

Hope this can help...

Skype's effect on Outlook has been documented in these newsgroups numerous
times.
