Outlook fails to shut down

David O'Brien

I'm running Office 2000 Pro SP3 with XP SP1a. When I try to end Outlook a
message 'Please wait while Microsoft Outlook exits' remains on the screen
and doesn't go. When I look at Tasks, Outlook is still running and it is
still in processes.I can start another instance of Outlook but like the
first instance it will not shut down.

If you google for this problem you will get numerous hits;
Often caused by apps the interface with OL2K eg fax, OL addins, comms etc,
but I'm afraid can be caused by ? - hard to pin down -

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Hi David,

My cent about this issue:

It seems to be a known issue for Outlook 2000. Thus, I would suggest you
applied the hotfix in the KB article:834005 Outlook 2000 Post-Service Pack
3 Hotfix Package: January 13, 2004
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=834005

Hope it helps.

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao
