Outlook freezes when sending email (RPC over Http)

We are using RPC over HTTP from a remote location from the local LAN.
PC's are XP SP2 (New) and Exchange is 2003 SP1.

It seems that Outlook is "updating folders" too often and when sending a
email it will hang / freeze. This is happening 40% of the time. We had 4mb
leased line for 20 users.
RPC over HTTP settings are use HTTP first for both slow and fast networks
and server and the mutual auth have correct entries.

Replaced / older PC's are not having this issue?

I cannot find anywhere to reduce the sync period for OAB and Mailbox folders.

Any ideas?

You didn't say what versions of Microsoft Outlook you are using, but here
are the first two things I would check.

1) Is Outlook configured for cached mode?

2) Do you have PST, OST, PAB, and OAB files excluded from real-time
antivirus scanning?

3) The OAB only updates itself in Outlook once every 24 hours if Outlook is
running in cached mode.

4) You should apply Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2. Your client workstations
should be minimum of Office 2003 Service Pack 2. Exchange has a new v4 of
the Offline Address Book. Some good changes for Outlook in regards to
checking mailbox limits before its sends an oversized message.

1. Outlook is configured in Cached mode

The other thing you might want to verify is that it is really connecting via
rpc/https. Hold down the ctrl key and then right click on the outlook icon
in the system tray next to clock. Pick connection status.

Other method to get the dialog I describe is to start Outlook with the
/rpcdiag switch.

Reason I suggest this is that you want to make sure that Outlook isn't
falling back to RPC over TCP since you didn't mention whether or not your
site uses the DisableRpcTcpFallback registry key.
