Outlook hanging and updates not installing

C

Campbs

We are using Windows XP and Outlook and on some machines we get the "Not
Responding" message. Particularly when using Outlook or Internet Exploerer,
we also notice that several updates have failed to install, svchost.exe is
taking alot of CPU and at leat 60-100mb of RAM. This brings the machine to a
non-responsive position for a very long time and sometimes until rebooted
manually.

When doing what with which version of Outlook and Internet Explorer with
what kind of configured mail account type?

I have the same issue with one of my clients machines.

Basically trying to do any actions in Outlook i.e open an email, reply to an
email etc. I am sure that it is something to do with Automatic Updates, and
as Mark said svchost.exe is running at 100%, kill this process and it kills
the automatic updates process as well.

Thanks

Yes, I understood your issue but you might want to answer my questions
first.

Additionaly; which updates did you install?

Mainly with Office 2003 SP2 and with Internet Explorer 6 & 7. We have tried
deleteing the contents of the softwaredistribution folder and also applying
hotfix 927891 with no luck.

We had this issue network wide with Automatic Updates. I have found
that if you just let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes with the CPU
running at 100%, that it will do what it needs to do. I have found
another issue that one of the Updates has apparently caused involving
Outlook profiles -- I will start a new thread with it, though.

I believe you are mixing the cause and the symptoms here. Does updating the
machines work correctly when Outlook is closed? If you get the same
svchost.exe results then your issue is not with Outlook. You might want to
ask for support in a Windows XP newsgroup then.

I have now corrected the issue and it was not an Outlook question as first
thought, so my apologies....It was fixed by applying Patch 927891 and
renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Thanks
