Outlook hanging on contact phone field

I just started using Outlook a few weeks ago (older 2003) and was having so
many problems with it hanging the second I tried to move the cursor out of
any phone number field when creating a new contact entry, I got ticked and
went to Best Buy and bought Office 2007, upgraded, using outlook 2007 now (as
of yesterday) - and exactly the same thing happens. Whats more, when I go to
customize to see if thats's where add-ins or anything weird is, it hangs
there too. Where do I start trying to fix this?

Is your windows installation fully updated?
Did you try detect and repair? (office diagnostics on 2007)

Pausing Telephony service (start menu, admin tools, services) may halt the
crashes, but its not a long term fix.

This is exactly what Microsoft came up with after 12-14 hours of being with
them on the phone throughout last night and today. They're treating it as
"the fix" - although - it wasn't shutting it off, but changing the login to
local and not network. They're writing up a follow up they'll send.

ps - I ran all the diag stuff I could find - including office diags, outlook
repair, scanpst, they reinstalled outlook twice - then we sat there for hours
and hours shot gunning services on and off, rebooting between small sets
until we found out it was the telephony service. (wish I talked to you
yesterday!)

so they had you change the log on acct for the telephony service to local to
stop it?

I knew about the telephony service trick because you are like the 3rd person
I've seen with the problem in recent days. Researching lead me to the
telephony fix - which caused me to discover another fix that a few people
want- with telephony paused, outlook won't format phone numbers to
(234)546-1234 format. Dialing wont work with it paused, but you can sync an
unformatted number with a PDA/phone device.
